| A SMART INVESTMENT Cambridge enters in competition with American universities and leaves the Continent far behind: Soon more staff members and new buildings for research and development to welcome thousands of new students. | Erika Maddalena. Cambridge, one of the greatest Universities in the world, is now working to become as big as its fame. An expansion of the campus has been now planned in the context of world wide competition. Three new colleges are going to be built additionally to the 31 already existing. This project includes of course an increase in students and staff: by 2016 the number of undergraduates and graduates will rise from 16.075 to ca. 18.930, and the number of staff members from 10.570 to 13.900 by 2025. American Universities are considered the top in the field of research: there are modern and technologically advanced laboratories where researchers and students from all over the world want to go even because its easier for them to publish their works there. Thats why its time for Europe to think in a competitive way, and Cambridge is maybe beginning to do so by enlarging also its research and development spaces. The huge project of expansion includes not only new buildings, parking places and cement: the grandeur of the structure reflects the will of reinforcing the whole educational system in England. A spokesman of Cambridge also said: In order for the University to remain a world class education establishment we need to retain the option to develop in a sustainable and environmentally responsible way.
