HORRIBLE BEAUTY OF TRUTH

   | TB. Richard Rorty, professor of comparative literature and philosophy at Stanford University, made a remarkable statement during a discussion in Potsdam this March. He said: “When I heard the news of September 11th, my first thought was: the government of Bush will use it as the Nazis used the Reichstag Fire.” WORK|OUT happened to share this brillant comparison, when the menace of the Iraq War was coming up in spring 2003 our journal’s cover was subtitled: “An American journalist wrote in 1933: First burned the Reichstag — then the whole world. The instigators of the attacks on the World Trade Center will remain unknown for long, while the deed itself continues to justify violations of human rights and international war.”
