Danger zone: Terrorists at the University of Munich!

   | Franca Tedeschi. (MÜNCHEN). The e-mail with the subject “Forward: Islamist attacks in Germany” that circulated in Munich’s Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) continues to cause trouble.
According to the German newspaper “taz”, the university’s administration had warned of the “increasing danger” regarding terrorist activities in the higher education sector. The German authorities, especially the local government of Bavaria urged university staff to be “very alert”. Furthermore, the e-mail instructed members of staff to report any “suspicious observations” which might “show an Islamist-fundamentalist attitude”.
But after the initial shock, the university is already pulling back: on a following press conference LMU’s President Bernd Huber expressed his regrets over the instruction’s wording that was “in parts not clear enough”. He reaffirmed that his university is “strictly against an atmosphere of spying, snooping or picking each other’s brains.”
However, Bavaria’s Interior Minister Günther Beckstein from the CSU is not so fussy with this kind of things. The Minister underlined the importance of a close collaboration between the security authorities and the universities, given the current situation. The Bavarian Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution also adheres to the policy of a close cooperation with universities. “Taking into account the analysis of the offenders’ behaviour, such as last year’s ‘suitcase bombers’, speaker Michael Feiler said to the “taz”, “those were students who did behave conspicuously, but we found out only when it was too late”.
