A Danish company offers an unusual service. Students can download textbooks from the internet for free (free because they contain advertisements every three to four pages). Nachdem angeblich Bombenanschläge auf zwei Regionalzüge in Koblenz und Dortmund verübt werden sollten, ist im Septmeber ein Libanese in Kiel verhaftet worden. Dort soll er studiert und in einem Studentenwohnheim gelebt haben. Laut Deutschlandradio herrscht jetzt an den Kieler Hochschulen „Betroffenheit und Angst: Der Terror ist plötzlich ganz nah.” — Wir haben die Nachricht entschlüsselt und richtig gestellt: Nachdem zwei Angeber in Koblenz und Dortmund Libanesisch geübt haben, wurde ein Kieler Regionalzug in ein Studentenwohnheim umgeleitet. Bei den Betroffenen herrscht jetzt eine Bombenstimmung: „Deutschland ist jetzt ganz nah!“ (tb)
SO LONG, EDOUARD BALLADUR! (FRANCE)
Nous avons l’immense regret de vous annoncer que Mr. Edouard Balladur, ancien Premier ministre français de 1993 à 1995, a décidé, ce vendredi 6 octobre 2006, de prendre sa retraite et de quitter la vie politique. Celui qui avait dit à ses partisans, à la suite de la débâcle de 1995, “Je vous demande de vous arrêter!” a fini lui aussi par suivre ce conseil plein de bon sens. Merci, Edouard, d’avoir enfin pris cette sage décision. (fg2)

Interessante episodio da guerra fredda. Il deputato del centro destra Fabio Garagnani, già noto in passato per simili inviti alla delazione, fa pervenire sui banchi dei professori di tutta l’Emilia Romagna l’invito a segnalare i casi di politicizzazione in aula, sulla scia di incitamenti al terzomondismo e pericolosi slogan umanitari. Dura e compatta la risposta dei sindacati Cgil, Cisl e Uil, ben consapevoli del valore simbolico oltre che quello strettamente pratico/legale insito in una tale proposta. In particolare, il deputato di FI, teme una dispersione dei valori della nostra cultura e ritiene doveroso arginare certi fenomeni di “aperta propaganda politica verso i giovani”. (em)
STUDYING IMAM IN GERMANY
After more than sixty years, the first three Jewish rabbis have been ordained in Germany this September. Now, politicians and professors are discussing the introduction of Islamic Theology at Berlin’s universities — presently possible only abroad. In a rare demonstration of consensus, all political fractions as well as most Muslim communities are supporting the idea. However, and here we are back on familiar ground, lack of money will probably get in the way of things soon enough. For now the plans will be “postponed until 2009”, read: forgotten about. A pity for Germany’s creaky-running integration process. (fg)
OPUS MAGNUM
The time to achieve something huge has been given in a double way to Prof. Dr. h.c. Hermann Deuser of the Religious Philosophic Research Institute (IRF). He is one of nine elected scientists in Germany who can be happy to be accepted to the new support program of “Pro Arts”.
The “Opus magnum” promotion has been initiated by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation together with the Volkswagen Foundation. The background of the initiative is the growing meaning of arts, as the knowledge society is becoming more and more complex in Europe’s coalescence. This coherence provides outstanding scientists a release offer to create long term scopes for development and action possibilities. (hf)
