GOING OUT IN LISBON

In the heat of Lisbon you better catch a cool breeze — and check André Silva’s hints.

Cervejaria Portugália (Rua da Cintura do Porto de Lisboa)
is one of the many restaurants of the oldest brewery in Portugal, spread all over Lisbon. I especially recommend it, because it is located directly in front of the river Tejo (Tagus) — for the self-brewed beer, that isn’t on sale anywhere else. Besides that, you might taste the excellent sea-food, another specialty of the restaurant. But don’t hurry to eat, the prices are not very appealing. However, you can simply enjoy the Hora da Loira (Blond Hour), between 4.30 and 6.30 p.m., where all beers are 50% off, meaning: 1,60 Euro for a 0,5l beer. So have a seat at the esplanade and enjoy the view.

Adega da Barroca & Bairro-Alto...
Finally getting hungry and yet eager to ease the many litres of beer you have drunk? Well, then take a walk, straight up the Rua da Madalena, crossing the Camoes Square. You will arrive in one of Lisbon’s oldest neighbourhoods — the Bairro Alto. The quarter is stuffed with bars, trendy stores and second-hand shops, and crowded with as many hip as “unhip” people. At the Adega da Barroca you get plenty of food and drinks that sometimes make it hard to empty your plate or your glass — for less than 10 Euro. I suggest to pass by at a relatively early hour, as it has become a very popular place.

Rua da Barroca & Galeria Ze dos Bois
You find yourself directly in the centre of one of Lisbon’s most effervescent nightlife with all sorts of pubs and bars, from punk-rock to smartly decorated discos, from tee-houses to the most average cafés.
If you pass by in Rua da Barroca n° 59, the Galeria Ze dos Bois offers various cultural attractions: from world-music concerts to theatre pieces and other performances. Check out the agenda hanging on the front-door and, before returning, stroll around in the narrow and car-free streets of this microcosm, enjoying both hustle and warm weather.
