SHORT NEWS Anatomy Reloaded A scandal about the sale of donated bodyparts stirs Californian med schools The story reads like an Edgar Wallace play: the Willed Body Program in Southern California is intended to make donated bodies available to the medical department of the University of California in Los Angeles for purposes of education and research. “Illegal activities involving the commercialization of human remains” now lead to the arrest of the program’s executive chair and two UCLA employees. The school’s program receives around 175 donated bodies each year and has a waiting list of more than 11.000 donations. The bodies — worth thousands of dollars to biomedical firms — are stored on UCLA campus.
