SCIENCE AND WAR

An international inquiry — Un’inchiesta internazionale di WORK|OUT — 06/2003

When my neighbour came up and showed me an article of the Turkish newspaper “Cumhuriyet” on Daniel Amit’s boycott I was instantly inspired by the idea to find out more about it and to create a discussion on it in WORK|OUT. In a further research I found no notice about it in the major German, Italian or American papers. But Mr Amit told me later that nearly 400 scientist from all over the world wrote him after he had sent his small communication with the editor of the Physical Review E to some friends.

I asked Emanuele Rodo, a friend of mine and student of physics in Berlin, if he’d like to help me. He liked it and so we did not only interview Mr Amit and others but created a questionary and spread out to search who to ask and talk with.

We discovered the large interest and the small activity on this field, discovered how necessary cultural work — that is education, learning of traditions and reflections beyond profession — is and will always be. Some of our contacts, like Gérard Toulouse or Marco Cervino, are constantly active in a public work for consciousness and debate, others didn’t even react.

We publish here our inquiry and all the additional material we collected. If you have questions or news on this issue, you can write us: letters@work-out.org.
